For a long time, my go-to style when I didn’t have time to do much to my hair was a parted low ponytail. I thought it was an okay look.
But so did this guy.
And while I love Hamilton as much as the next guy, I just wasn’t stoked about channeling our Founding Fathers with my hair.
So I’ve got a few ultra quick hairstyles for keeping my hair in this century. On point, as the youths say. Or maybe they don’t say that. I think maybe they are saying “on fleek” nowadays but I will have no part in that nonsense.
So for my fellow non-teenagers, but non-founding fathers, here’s another quick and stylish hair style for those days where you need more than a Alexander Hamilton pony, but don’t have time for a full blow out.
A dutch braid is basically an inside out french braid. Rather than the traditional outside-crosses-over-to-the-middle braid, we braid the outside sections UNDER the middle section, pulling the middling section over the top. I tried really hard to braid slow and explain it in this video. So for those of you who, like me, finding braiding their own hair insanely confusing, I hope this video helps!
This Mohawk Dutch braid can be worn several ways. You can wear it as a an easy half ponytail, wrapping a small section of the ponytail around the elastic. This style is great for second day curls that are a little un-done and messy.
Or, if that feels too I Dream of Jeanie for you, back comb the little ponytail and twist it up into a messy bun. This look is super trendy right now, and great for a messy-on-purpose look.
Or, you can throw it all up for a punk rock ponytail! I actually love this look, especially with some fun earrings. But I have an infected ear lobe (TMI? sorry…) So I can’t wear earrings right now. Boo. But it’s cute anyway.
Braiding my own hair is always sort of a struggle for me, and I love this style because I can see my hands the whole time, and I only have to make it a few braid cycles before I tie it off. Try it out next time you need a super quick hairstyle and let me know what you think!
