A lot of people are really intimidated by liquid liner. But I am on a mission to convert everyone to my Church of Liquid Eyeliner. I honestly think it’s easier, more versatile, produces more consistent results, and with a few tips and a little practice, I promise you it isn’t hard! I still have pencil eyeliner for softer looks, lighter colors, and lining my waterline when I’m in the mood. But I use liquid liner 90% of the time.
Choosing a Liner
I go through liquid liner fairly quickly, so I am all about drug store make up for this. I love to experiment with new kinds, and I grabbed a few new ones to try out for this tutorial. They all have things I liked and didn’t like about them, but I am still crushing hard on the NYX Epic Liner. Easiest liquid liner out there. I also really love the NYX Vinyl Liquid Liner.
You have a few options for application type when you choose a liquid liner. The easiest to apply is definitely the pen type liquid liner. In the past, I’ve loved the NYX Super Fat Eye Marker. But it can be hard to find, so I’ve branched out. For a more delicate line and subtle cat eye, I love the thinner brush applicators.

The first 3 eye liners pictured here are brush-style liquid liners. The NYX super skinny is an okay place to start if you’re afraid of liquid liner. It’s forgiving and not as wet, but I think the pen tip is a little stiff. The L’oreal and NYX marker/pen liners are fantastic and I love them both. The last 2 are the thin brushes you probably think of when you think of liquid liner. A little harder to apply than the markers, but a must have for a delicate kitten eye or flawless cat eye.
I’ve tried the roller liquid liners, the color pots with an angle brush, and any other kind of eyeliner they make, but I find myself consistently coming back the NYX liners. Can’t beat the price, too!
Alright, let’s get down to business.
Every Day Eyeliner
To use liquid eyeliner for an every day look, start by resting your palm against your cheek as you apply. This will help steady your hand. You can even put your elbow down on the counter for more stability. Hold the liner horizontally. You are applying with the edge of the liner, not the tip!
Start in the middle of your eyelid. Try to keep your eyes slightly open as you apply your eyeliner. You can put a mirror on the counter and look down as you draw. This will help you draw a more natural line to the shape of your eye.
Make short little strokes as you work your way towards the center of your eye, keeping the line very thin and snug up to your lashes. Return to the center and continue drawing the line to the outer corner of your eye. Give the line a tiny flick at the outside edge.
See? Liquid liner can still be totally casual and good for an every day simple look. Once you get the hang of it, it’s a snap to apply.
The Kitten Eye
To spice things up just a bit, you can add just a tiny little flick of a little mini-cat eye, or a kitten eye.
Very gently pull the skin at the corner of your eye taught. We want it smooth, but NOT tight! Just create a smooth surface to draw your line on. When you add your cat eye on your right side, you will draw the line from the upper corner DOWN to the corner of your eye. On your left side, you will draw from the corner of your eye UP to the outside of the cat eye. If you are left handed, I imagine this will be just reversed. Sorry, lefties. Someone should start a tutorial blog just for the poor lefties of the world (Hi Mom! and Danica! I love you even if you are genetically inferior in your left-handedness.)
Imagine a line that would extend from the corner of your eye to the outside of your eyebrow. This is your guide for drawing your cat eye. For our kitten eye, we are just adding a gentle flick. With your eyes open, it will just look like your eyelashes are extra long and lovely at the outside of your eyes. Draw your line and connect it to the thin eyeliner you have already drawn on.
It’s easy! Truly. A lot of Pinterest tips will tell you to use a spoon or tape or something to get the perfect cat eye, but it just takes a steady hand and a little practice. And who has spoons and tape in their bathrooms? With the right liner and these tips, I promise you it’s easier than you think.
A little kitten eye adds such a polished touch to your eye make up.
Nothing too crazy, just a little sass with a little flick.
Cat Eye
If you’re really ready to bring the drama, it’s time for that little kitten wing to become a full blown cat eye.
I like to apply my eyeliner in these phases. I start with just the simple eyeliner, draw on my kitten eye, and then amp up the drama to transform the kitten wing into a cat eye.
Start my extending your line a bit higher towards your eyebrows. Draw this line out farther than you think. With your eyes open, you need a formidable cat eye to really pop.
Starting right below the top corner of your wing, draw a line to the center of your lid to meet the liner there. Fill in any spots that are between these two lines.
A dramatic cat eye isn’t necessarily something I do every day, but it’s a fun look to have up your sleeve for a night out. Or in my case, for looking like a lady of the night at preschool pick up today when I took these pictures and then immediately had to go pick up my son.
A Tuesday morning is as good a time as any to channel you inner sex kitten. Meow!
I love your tutorials and your amazing attention to detail!! Thank you!!
Thank you so much, Fayette!!
